Free and cheap things to do on Chicago game days
Ways to be around a Chicago team without buying a full-price seat. Every item below is from a team or venue page read for this site. If a price, cover charge, or start time was not on that page, it is not filled in.
Public watch party
For the Oct. 18 Bears game in Atlanta, noon CT on FOX, the club’s how-to-watch note names one official party: the Miller Lite Away Game Watch Party at JW Hollstein’s Saloon, 17358 Oak Park Ave., Tinley Park. Entertainment starts an hour before kickoff. The note lists Staley Da Bear and the Monster Squad, music by Bears DJ JayFunk, giveaways while supplies last, photo ops, and trivia. It says there are food and drink specials and does not print the prices.
That is the only official public watch party verified for a game in this week’s file. Bars on the neighborhood pages are rooms a source named. They are not the team’s party.
Practices open to fans
The Blackhawks say all of their practices at Blackhawks Ice Center presented by Fifth Third Bank, 1801 W. Jackson Blvd., are open to the public. Spectators sit in the rink bleachers, reached from the second floor. Viewing along the boards is not allowed. The practice schedule can change or be canceled, typically within 12 to 24 hours, and the team points people to the Ice Center events calendar for the latest ice time. No single upcoming slot is copied here.
Bears training-camp practices at Halas Hall were ticketed and free, and the camp page says those 2026 tickets are sold out. The listed dates were in late July and early August, so that is not a way in for a game this week.
Team events that were free
Fire II said all 14 of its 2026 regular-season home matches would stay free and open to the public. The team closed that season on Sept. 20 against Chattanooga FC at SeatGeek Stadium. There is no remaining free Fire II home match.
Bulls Fest was free with a ticket, on Aug. 22 and 23 at United Center Lot C, 1901 W. Madison St. Youth hoops clinics at that festival were $10. The weekend has passed.
Official low-cost offers
These are team programs, not a checked get-in price. Dollar amounts that were not on the page are not repeated.
- Bulls Student Pass. College students with a .edu email. The team says it covers home games while inventory lasts, four tickets per game. You pick an area, not a seat, before you pay.
- Blackhawks Student Rush. Registered students with a .edu address get a text 24 to 48 hours before puck drop on select home games. Text STUDENT to 242957. Tickets go only to that email, cannot be transferred, and everyone on the order enters together.
- Fire and a Wintrust debit card. The tickets page, read Oct. 15, 2026, says Wintrust Bank debit cardholders with the Chicago Fire card design get 50% off tickets to select matches, plus 10% off at the team store at Soldier Field. It does not name the matches.
- CUBS U and School Night. Students 18 or older with a .edu address can text CUBSU to 88019. Offers are last-minute, limited to four tickets, and delivered in the MLB Ballpark app 90 minutes before the game. The budget guide also describes a School Night Special on select weeknight home games that bundles a ticket with a hot dog and a nonalcoholic drink. The 2026 season is over, so neither is on sale for a game this week. No bundle price was copied.
No Bears, White Sox, or Sky student, rush, or promo price was verified, so none is listed.
FAQ
Is the Bears watch party free?
The Bears name JW Hollstein’s Saloon in Tinley Park as the Miller Lite away-game watch party for the Oct. 18 Falcons game. Entertainment starts an hour before the noon CT kickoff. The page does not say whether the bar charges a cover, and it does not list drink prices, so neither is printed here.
Can I watch a Blackhawks practice?
The Blackhawks say every practice at Blackhawks Ice Center, 1801 W. Jackson Blvd., is open to the public. Sit in the second-floor bleachers, not along the boards. The ice time can change or be canceled within 12 to 24 hours, so this page does not copy a specific practice slot.
Are Fire II matches still free?
The club said all 14 regular-season home matches in 2026 were free and open to the public. Fire II closed the season on Sept. 20 at SeatGeek Stadium. There is no later free home match to attend.
